On August 27, 2009 I made my first visit to Nantucket in several years. It was nice to be back on the island as it is my favorite of the two cape islands and the weather could not have been better.
Making the trip all the better was being in the company of two of my favorite models to work with, Libby and Alex. The three of us have worked together quite a bit this year but this was the first time the three of us had a chance to work together. The results were not disappointing!
It was an early start to the day as I loaded the car and left Chelsea to pick the girls up. The drive down was mostly uneventful which was good. I had some concerns that Hyannis would be chaotic due to the death of Senator Kennedy and the knowledge that his motorcade would be leaving at about the time of our arrival at Hyannis. My concerns were unfounded and it had the typical look and feel of the end of the summer season fast approaching.
Off we went on our first high speed ferry ride to Nantucket. During our trip, I had the rare privilege of seeing the entire contents of the handbags of Libby and Alex. The amount of stuff they pulled out of their bags was really impressive!
Our first stop was for the girls to get their hair styled at Darya. The staff at the salon was expecting us and were prepared and they did a nice job. From there it was off to our fist shoot location, Jetties beach, which is near town on the east side of the island.
It was in the middle of the day but it seemed like a good opportunity for us to check our equipment and for the girls to get loosened up a bit.
Needless to say, with two beautiful women in Brazilian swimwear provided by Nara Paz and carrying lots of camera equipment, we attracted a lot of attention. When I asked a young guy on the beach if he would assist us with our large diffusion panel, there was no hesitation in his willingness to help.
We went to work and did two looks and I was pleased that it appeared we would probably get a few money shots out of the session. After a short break for tea, we called a taxi and headed to Madaket beach on the west side. This beach is noted for its surfing and long sandy beaches. It seemed like a perfect place to do our main session as the sun started to settle low in the sky.
Getting up at dawn, making the trek to the island and carrying around all that stuff all day paid off. As the sun settled and set, we were rewarded with a gorgeous sky and soft warm light that added to the beautiful skin tones of these two gorgeous gals.
We worked enthusiastically knowing we had been blessed with good lighting and perfect cloud cover to give us the wonderful warm tones and did not stop shooting until the sun had gone down completely. We all knew we had accomplished our mission and with that wonderful feeling of satisfaction, we headed back to town.
It was chilly on the beach and as we grew tired and hungry, we couldn’t wait to get to town and have dinner.
The dinner was great and the conversation engaging and fun.
While waiting for the ferry, Libby noticed the store of someone she ran into on the street in town earlier in the day that was from Israel. We had some time to kill before the boat and while talking to him, we discovered that he knew Libby’s brother! It is indeed a small world.
The ferry ride back went in the blink of an eye as we reviewed all of our work from the day’s shoot.
We had a wonderful day and you could not have asked for two better companions to spend a long hard day with.
They never complained and worked hard and made a beautiful island even prettier!
